Since in the earlier series 1 out of 3 photos was in color, I decided to zoom in on monochrome photography. Color shots became relatively rare and the b/w pictures got a strong s-curve and (too) high contrast.
“Tokyo Blues” marked the beginning of a new phase in photography for me.
On the one hand, I started to go back to places, to try new angles, perspectives, and different light during different hours of the same scenes. ‘Reshooting’ this way, sometimes 3 or 4 times, opened up learning opportunities I didn’t expect.
On the other hand, I got myself some better equipment. Taking photos with a halfway decent camera instead of an iPhone is a crazy game changer. Suddenly half of my shots were completely out of focus, and at another quarter I ruined the composition of thirds, lines, and angles, 10% were gone for f-ing up framing, and 10% were gone for wrong balance. Man!
However, the few remaining photos paid out a hundred times for the effort.
