Rules, order, discipline, respect, are all common virtues of daily life in Japan. Standing on the left side of the escalator to let others pass over on the right, almost always works quite automatically as it seems. Only in Osaka and neighboring areas, this rule changes where you stand on the right and walk on the left. However, no one was able to tell me where this exception originated from.
